Spurs vs Newcastle Betting Preview

By Ernie Bibby, Friday, December 8, 2023 9:41 am

Two sides looking to bounce back from midweek defeats meet on Sunday afternoon as Newcastle travel to North London to face Spurs. This game kicks off at 4:30pm UK time.

Spurs

Spurs’ worrying form continued on Thursday night as they slipped to yet another defeat. Ange Postecoglu’s side had been the early pacesetters, however, they’ve dropped off recently and have failed to win any of their last five outings. Not only have they been failing to pick up maximum points, they’ve also slipped to defeat in four of those games.

Ange Postecoglu is likely to point to the injuries sustained this season, however, this weekend’s opponents (and Brighton) have also suffered a similar fate. Even the return of Cristian Romero failed to give them a lift, although the defender did find his way onto the scoresheet. Spurs failed to unlock West Ham’s defence and are badly missing the creativity of James Maddison. Son was lively enough, however, Kulesevski had an off night and Richarlison really should have buried his opportunity in the second half.

Spurs games have been very lively this season, although their home games have averaged just 3 goals per game, which is paltry compared to their matches on the road (3.75).

Questions will be asked about Ange Postecoglu’s tactics, however, the players clearly enjoy working with him. Spurs’ defence has never looked particularly secure under the Australian, and both West Ham goals were easily preventable. The hosts looked all at sea at the back and with striker Son describing his side as ‘soft’, there are plenty of concerns heading into Sunday’s clash.

Spurs have taken the lead in each of their last five matches and yet they’ve failed to win any of them. They are likely to fly out of the traps here, but can they hold on this time?

Newcastle

Newcastle’s issues on the road continued on Thursday night as they slipped to a 3-0 defeat at Goodison Park. The Magpies have won 88% of their home matches, yet they’ve been victorious in just 14% of their away trips and this is a tough assignment.

The Tyneside outfit have had a tough schedule and they’ve struggled to juggle Premier League and Champions League football simultaneously. Injuries have also hit them hard with Jamal Lascelles the latest player to hobble off. The defender was replaced by Emil Krafth, who is a right-back by trade and has only just returned from a long-term absence. Nick Pope was injured at the weekend and Newcastle fans will have been fearing the worst watching Martin Dubravka go down twice on Thursday night.

The Newcastle players looked visibly exhausted by the end of their 3-0 defeat to Everton with young players such as Lewis Miley having been forced to play far more minutes than expected.

Kieran Trippier made a couple of uncharacteristic mistakes on Thursday night and this is a big ask for the same set of players to go again. They may also have one eye on their midweek Champions League clash vs AC Milan.

Head to Head

There have been some hugely memorable meetings between these teams in recent seasons and they always tend to deliver when it comes to entertainment. Newcastle were 6-1 winners at St. James’ Park last season completing the double over this opposition. The visitors haven’t got a great record on the road this season, yet they emerged 2-1 winners at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in October 2022.

Spurs have won just one of their last four matches here against Newcastle and they will be looking to improve that record on Sunday. Three of the last five meetings have featured fewer than two goals, however, the last two matches at this venue have thrown up nine goals accumulatively.

Key Betting Stats

  • Newcastle have conceded 2+ goals in each of their last four away games and in five of their last six.
  • Newcastle have conceded a goal after the 70th minute in each of their last four away games.
  • Kieran Trippier has chalked up seven assists this season, four of these have been away from home.
  • Dejan Kulesevski is averaging 2.6 shots per game at this stadium
  • Spurs are yet to win a penalty this season
  • Spurs scored exactly two goals in each of their first four home matches. They’ve subsequently netted exactly one goal in their last three.

Match Prediction

Neither of these sides are entering this game in any sort of form. Newcastle’s away form has been pretty awful this season, whereas Spurs haven’t been particularly impressive throughout November and December.
