Wolves vs Newcastle Betting Preview

By Ernie Bibby, Thursday, October 26, 2023 10:53 am

Newcastle will be determined to bounce back from their midweek UCL defeat when they visit Molineux on Saturday evening. Wolves will be aiming to continue their unbeaten run and should make it difficult for the Magpies. This game kicks off at 5:30pm.

Wolves

Wolves manager Gary O’Neil was delighted to see his side clinch a 2-1 victory against his former employers Bournemouth last weekend. The Old Gold were helped by the Cherries indiscipline and although it took them a while to capitalise on their advantage, they still managed to secure all three points and extend their unbeaten streak to four.

Wolves have taken four points off strugglers Luton and Bournemouth, yet they have also beaten champions Manchester City in the last month and despite riding their luck at times, they also managed to secure a point against rivals Aston Villa.

Despite the pre-season cloud of negativity, there have been plenty of sunny spells for the hosts so far and even in defeat (mainly during the opening weekend defeat vs Man United), there have been positives to take from their performances.

Goals are still an issue for the hosts with perhaps a bit of an over-reliance on Hwang-Hee Chan. The Korean has netted all four of Wolves’ goals at Molineux this season and although Matheus Cunha, Pedro Neto and Sasa Kalajdzic have chipped in on the road, they could still do with spreading the goals around a little more extensively.

Tommy Doyle is finally off and running for his latest club and although the 22-year old has just 59 minutes of PL football under his belt this season, he is expected to figure prominently throughout the remainder of the campaign.

Newcastle

Newcastle strolled to victory last weekend at St. James’ Park and blew Crystal Palace away in the first 60 minutes. Unfortunately, they werent able to follow that up in midweek as they slipped to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Borussia Dortmund. Eddie Howe’s men have lost a number of key players over the last seven days including Alexander Isak, who hobbled off on Wednesday evening.

Creative hub Harvey Barnes has a foot injury which keeps him on the sidelines where he is joined by Jacob Murphy who also went off in midweek. Add Sven Botman and Elliott Anderson to the list alongside Sandro Tonali’s impending ban and Howe’s options suddenly appear to be a bit limited. Although Joe Willock looks set to return to the XI shortly, Howe will be conscious of rushing the midfield back too soon.

The Toon have won just one of their first four away games this season in the PL with their 8-0 victory over Sheffield United doing plenty of heav lifting. Having managed just a single clean sheet on their travels so far, Newcastle cannot be trusted to keep the hosts off the scoresheet.

The visitors are also faced with a fairly tight turnaround. They played on Wednesday night and it’s always tough to turn things around quickly in time for the Saturday teatime slot.

Head to Head

Recent matches between these two sides have been fairly close. The pair played out a 1-1 draw at this stadium last season with Alain Saint-Maximin’s last goal cancelling out Ruben Neves’ opener. Newcastle won the return leg 2-1 at St. James’ Park.

None of the last five matches between this pair have featured more than two goals. 2011 was the last time that a match between these sides at Molineux contained three or more goals.

Newcastle haven’t managed to win at this venue since 2017. Aleksandar Mitrovic’s strike was enough to secure maximum points for the visitors on that occasion.

Key Betting Stats

  • Hwang-Hee Chan is the only Wolves player to have found the net at Molineux so far this season
  • Newcastle’s shot conversion rate away from home this season is an impressive 28%
  • None of Newcastle’s first four away games this season have featured more than eight corners.
  • Wolves have conceded a second half goal in each of their opening four home matches
  • Wolves have taken the lead in each of their last three matches at Molineux
  • Four of Kieran Trippier’s six PL assists have been away from home.

Match Prediction

Newcastle may feel a little unprepared for this fixture and they may struggle to take three points. They will almost certainly get one the scoresheet though. Wolves are always good for a goal in front of their own fans.
