Liverpool vs Everton Betting Preview

By Ernie Bibby, Wednesday, October 18, 2023 10:28 pm

Premier League football is back! The top flight fixture list begins with a fascinating Merseyside derby as Everton make the extremely short hop across to Anfield. The game kicks off at 12:30pm.

Liverpool

Liverpool have made a terrific start to the season despite a moderate overhaul of their squad this summer. Nevertheless, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp will have been disappointed to have taken just a single point from their last two games heading into the October international break.

We’ve heard plenty about the VAR controversies vs Spurs, however, Liverpool were unable to hold onto their 2-1 lead at the AMEX and they will be glad to get back to Anfield for this lunchtime kick-off.

Liverpool’s record in front of their own fans is impeccable and they have taken maximum points at home so far. They’ve also scored exactly three goals in each of those encounters.

Last season, they won 13 of their 19 matches at this stadium in the Premier League with only relegated Leeds leaving Anfield with maximum points. Their 13 victories included a comfortable 2-0 success against their rivals in mid-February.

Having lost just one of the last 25 Merseyside derbies, Liverpool will be full of confidence heading into this contest.

Reds fans will have been frustrated to see Andy Robertson pick up a shoulder injury whilst representing Scotland during the international break and Jurgen Klopp will have to decide whether to deploy Kostas Tsimikas or Joe Gomez on the left. Curtis Jones is the other absentee for the hosts with the midfielder serving the final game of his ban.

Everton

The general consensus appears to be that Everton have greatly underperformed their numbers this season. They’ve had a tough start to the campaign, yet their performances have been far better than the bare results would suggest.

Their xG numbers have been mightily impressive, and despite scoring on just ten occasions, the data would suggest they should have found the net around 15 times. According to FOTMOB, they’ve missed 20 big chances so far this season, more than any other side in the division. Clearly, with some better finishing, they could be comfortably positioned in the top half.

The Toffees have won two of their last three outings, although they do need to add some consistency to their performances. Having battered Brentford as the outsiders, they subsequently lost at home to Luton despite being heavily odds-on. They’re unpredictable, however, they are unbeaten in their last two away games and simply cannot be underestimated.

Sean Dyche has no new injuries to worry about with Seamus Coleman, Andre Gomes and Deli Alli still sidelined. Dyche has named a fairly steady XI in recent weeks and assuming that there are no unknown knocks sustained on international duty, he is likely to stick with his favoured formation.

Head to Head

As we’ve already suggested, Liverpool have truly dominated this fixture in recent years.

Everton have failed to score in each of the last three meetings between these sides and they were defeated 2-0 at Anfield last season. The Toffees’ only victory in the last 25 Merseyside derbies came during the COVID season and it was played behind closed doors. Liverpool were forced to name a makeshift defence in that defeat.

Liverpool have won six of the last seven Merseyside derbies at Anfield with Everton failing to score in three of the last four. BTTS has landed in just one of the last six meetings at this ground.

Key Betting Stats

  • There have been exactly four goals in each of Everton’s first three away games this season
  • Liverpool have scored exactly three goals in each of their three home matches this season
  • After failing to score in their first three matches, Everton have now scored ten times in their last five outings
  • Liverpool have conceded just two second half goals so far this season. The fewest of any PL side.
  • Mo Salah is averaging 3.4 shots per game so far this season
  • Everton’s top goalscorer is Abdoulaye Doucoure, who has netted three times and is averging two shots per game.

Match Prediction

Despite Everton’s performances, it’s hard to look beyond the home side on Saturday lunchtime. They have an excellent record in this fixture and despite facing a reshuffle at the back, they still have the majority of their attacking players available. This could be a high-scoring and hugely entertaining spectacle.
