Newcastle vs Liverpool Betting Preview

By Ernie Bibby, Wednesday, August 23, 2023 8:57 pm

Newcastle will be hoping to bounce back from their 1-0 defeat at Manchester City when they host Liverpool at St. James’ Park on Sunday afternoon. This game kicks off at 4:30pm.

Newcastle

Newcastle received a reality check last weekend as they were narrowly defeated by Manchester City at the Etihad. It was a fairly subdued and low-key performance from Eddie Howe’s side and fans will be hoping that a return to Tyneside will help them recapture last season’s form. The Magpies were at their ruthless best against Aston Villa on the opening day of the season. They found joy in the final third, and although they were helped by some abysmal Villa defending (and unfortunate injuries), they took full advantage.

Sandro Tonali has made a fantastic start to his Newcastle career and Alexander Isak looks extremely sharp and motivated.

Last season, the hosts suffered just two defeats at this venue, however one of those losses came against this weekend’s opposition. Remarkably, they kept clean sheets in 47% of their matches here, however, defensive injuries have hampered their performances so far.

During the 2022-23 campaign, they remained undefeated against any side positioned seventh or below, however, they weren’t quite as impressive against top seven opposition. Liverpool were the only side to do the double over them last season.

Liverpool

Liverpool’s summer transfer business has been fairly high-profile this summer and having missed out on a number of transfer targets (mainly to Chelsea), they managed to finally capture a defensive midfielder in the shape of Wataru Endo.

The Reds look dynamite going forward and are likely to create plenty of chances, however, they can be vulnerable the back and keeping clean sheets could be difficult this season. Jurgen Klopp’s side fell behind against Bournemouth before turning the tie around. Nevertheless, they came under threat several times and aren’t entirely convincing in defence.

Although their opening day draw with Chelsea looked fairly reasonable at the time, the Blues’ result and performance against West Ham on Sunday makes that point look like a fairly disappointing outcome.

The Reds’ away form was fairly patchy last season and although they won at St. James’ Park, it was one of just six away victories throughout the entire campaign.

They will have to do this without Alexis McAllister, who was sent off against Bournemouth for a high boot.

Head to Head

Liverpool have a terrific record in this match-up and they are unbeaten against this opposition since December 2015. The Reds won both fixtures last season and they have also come out on top in each of the last four meetings.

Curiously, Newcastle have failed to score in each of their last three meetings at this ground and Liverpool have won four of their last five visits to Tyneside.

Key Betting Stats

  • Liverpool’s game averaged 3.21 goals per game last season. (3.11 away from home)
  • Although they kept a clean sheet at St. James’ Park last season, they conceded an average of 1.58 goals per game on the road.
  • Only West Ham picked up fewer yellow cards on average than Liverpool last season.
  • Newcastle averaged 16.89 shots per game at home last season
  • Callum Wilson is yet to start a game for Newcastle, however, he is still averaging two shots per game and has already found the back of the net.
  • Three Liverpool players are averaging more than 3.5 shots per game so far – Luis Diaz, Mo Salah and Diogo Jota.

Match Prediction

Liverpool have an outstanding record in this fixture and although Newcastle are very good at home, the Reds undoubtedly have a psychological advantage over their hosts. This is unlikely to be as crazy and as high-scoring as Newcastle’s opening clash at this venue and a narrow away win could be the outcome.
