France Women vs Jamaica Women Betting Preview

By Ernie Bibby, Thursday, July 20, 2023 5:36 pm

Group F begins with France taking on Jamaica on Sunday morning. The 2019 hosts aren’t fancied to lift the trophy, although their pre-tournaments odds suggest that they can progress to the latter stages. This match takes place at 11am UK time.

France Women

Despite being hosts, France were eliminated at the quarter-final stage of the 2019 World Cup and with that disappointment now firmly behind them, they will quietly fancy their chances of progressing in New Zealand.

Herve Renard has taken charge of the team and although his record domestically is frighteningly poor, he is a notable international coach who became the first manager to clinch two AFCON titles with two different nations. He also guided Morocco to the 2018 World Cup and was the brains behind Saudi Arabia’s shock 2-1 victory over Argentina in Qatar 2022. With Renard in the dugout, Les Bleus will be set up perfectly for tournament football.

There was plenty of animosity between the playing squad and the previous management with several players including captain Wendie Renard amongst those who said they wouldn’t make themselves available for the World Cup, however, the change in the dugout has helped to ease tensions.

France have beaten Canada, Ireland and Colombia in warm-up friendlies, however, they suffered a small setback with a recent 1-0 loss to Australia.

Jamaica Women

Jamaica’s first ever World Cup appearance was hugely forgettable with three consecutive defeats with 12 goals conceded. They did manage to notch their first-ever World Cup goal in their 4-1 defeat to Jamaica.

Having disbanded in 2004 and reformed in 2014, Jamaica have done well to get to this stage and under Lorne Donaldson, they are likely to be exciting and unpredictable over the next couple of weeks.

Khadjia Shaw is the leader of the Reggae Girlz and has been inspirational in promoting the sport and helping it to evolve in Jamaica. Jody Brown is another key player whose goals are likely to be key if they have any hopes of qualifying for the knock-out rounds.

Despite beating Morocco in a pre-tournament friendly, Jamaica still look dodgy at the back and were defeated 7-3 by Mexico at the beginning of July.

Head to Head

Jamaica and France are meeting one another for the first time.

Key Betting Stats

  • France have been eliminated at the quarter final stage in each of their last two World Cup appearances
  • Les Bleus have scored exactly 10 goals in each of their last three World Cup appearances
  • Eugenie Le Sommer has scored 86 goals in 175 appearances for her country and is France’s leading all-time scorer.
  • As hosts, France won all three of their group games in the 2019 tournament and conceded just a single goal.
  • Khadija Shaw is the most capped player for Jamaica and is also her countries top goal-scorer with 56 goals in 38 appearances.
  • Jamaica lost all four of their World Cup matches in 2019 and were trailing at HT in each of those games
  • There were 19 goals across Jamaica’s three matches at the CAC Women’s Games

Match Prediction

Jamaica are likely to be hugely entertaining to watch and they could spring a few upsets along the way. However, France, under the experienced Herve Renard, should be accomplished enough to ease past the Reggae Girlz.

Winning Combo

France to Win, France to be winning at HT, Over 3.5 Goals and Eugenie Le Sommer to score 2+ goals
