Norway vs Scotland Betting Preview

By Ernie Bibby, Thursday, June 15, 2023 3:50 pm

Scotland will be aiming to step another step towards qualification for Euro 2024 as they travel to the Ullevaal Stadion to take on Norway. The game kicks off at 5pm UK time on Saturday afternoon.

Norway

Norway are desperate to qualify for Euro 2024, however, they haven’t made the best start. Having failed to qualify for a major tournament since 2000 and having seen their Nordic neighbours enjoy relative success at recent competitions, they will be hoping to put a disappointing sequence of results firmly behind them.

Although winning against Spain in Malaga was always going to be a tough ask, fans will have expected more than a 1-1 draw with Georgia in their last qualifier at the end of March. Alexander Sorloth gave Stale Solbakken’s side the lead, however, they failed to hold onto that advantage and could only take a point from the contest.

Although third place is far from ideal, they do have the chance to rectify the situation with consecutive home games against Scotland and Cyprus over the next few days.

The majority of the focus is likely to be on Champions League winner Erling Haaland, however, he hasn’t always thrived on the international stage and it remains to be seen whether he can end his own international goal drought.

Scotland

Scotland were sensational against Spain at Hampden Park last time out and although former boss Alex McLeish’s claim that ‘every side will fear facing Scotland’ might feel a little over the top, the Scots have become significantly tougher to beat under Steve Clarke.

With Spain not in qualifying action this weekend, Scotland have an opportunity to go six points clear at the top of the table. The Tartan Army will be hoping to qualify for consecutive European Championships and they have put themselves in a decent position to book their place on a flight to Germany next summer.

With the safety net of their Nations League ranking, Scotland look well-placed to qualify, however, Clarke will not allow his side to take their foot off the gas here.

For all of their good form, Scotland have been weaker on the road. They have failed to win in four of their last five away games, however, this is only a relatively short trip.

Steve Clarke has a couple of injury issues to deal with, however, the squad is deep enough to cope with the loss of Anthony Ralston and potentially John Souttar. Blackburn’s Dom Hyam, who comes off the back of a superb season, may be in contention for a start.

Head to Head

This is the first meeting between these two sides since a 2013 international friendly in which Scott Brown’s first half strike made the difference.

These two sides were also drawn alongside one another during the 2010 World Cup qualifying. Scotland failed to score in both encounters and lost 4-0 in Norway with former Blackburn legend Morten Gamst Pedersen netting twice.

Key Betting Stats

  • Scotland have failed to score in four of the last six meetings between these two sides
  • Norway have scored just four times across their last five matches. Alexander Sorloth has netted 50% of those goals.
  • Norway lost just one of their qualifiers for the 2020 World Cup (vs Spain), however, they were eliminated in the play-offs by Serbia.
  • Scotland have kept consecutive clean sheets in their opening two qualifiers
  • Man United midfielder Scott McTominay has netted each of Scotland’s last four goals.
  • Scotland won just two of their away Euro qualifiers ahead of Euro 2020. These victories came against Cyprus and San Marino.

Match Prediction

Scotland are typically tough to beat under Steve Clarke, however, they aren’t as effective on the road. Nevertheless, they’ll be looking to remain unbeaten and preserve their lead at the top of the table. Norway are better on home turf, however, they are far from convincing at this moment in time. They may have to settle for a frustrating point.
