Liverpool vs Arsenal Betting Preview

By Ernie Bibby, Thursday, April 6, 2023 6:37 pm

The final Premier League game of the weekend sees leaders Arsenal travel to Anfield to face Liverpool. This game kicks off at 4:30pm UK Time.

Liverpool

Liverpool’s winless streak continued on Tuesday as the Reds struggled to break down Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Although it prevented Jurgen Klopp’s side from slumping to a third consecutive defeat, there was an inevitably about Liverpool’s wastefulness in front of goal.

Nevertheless, the hosts are far strong at home and have picked up 30 points (out of a possible 39) at this venue so far. They’ve suffered just a single defeat in front of their own fans so far and have kept four consecutive clean sheets in front of their own fans.

Although they still managed to keep a clean sheet in midweek, Virgil Van Dijk missed out on Tuesday night due to an illness, however, the Dutchman is expected to return for this fixture. Both Thiago and Luis Diaz are back in training, however, this game may come too soon for the returning pair.

Liverpool were overtaken by Brighton in midweek and they desperately need to start picking up points in order to avoid drifting in mid-table obscurity. They will be glad to put a run of three consecutive away games firmly behind them.

Arsenal

Arsenal matched Manchester City’s result last weekend as they smashed Leeds at the Emirates. Unlike this weekend’s opponents, the Gunners have also benefitted from a full week to prepare for this crucial fixture.

Mikael Arteta’s side still have an eight point cushion at the top of the table and they have won each of their last seven Premier League matches. With the exception of their upcoming clash with title rivals Man City, this is the leaders’ toughest remaining match and they will be keen to come away with at least a point.

They don’t have a particularly good record at this stadium and it’s been over a decade since they left with maximum points. Nevertheless, they’ve got the best away record in the division and have been breached on just nine occasions on their travels.

The Gunners don’t have too many injury issues here with only William Saliba and Eddie Nketiah likely to miss out for the visitors.

Head to Head

These two sides played out a fabulously topsy-turvy 90 minutes when they met earlier in the campaign with Arsenal coming out on the right side of the result (3-2).

Despite this recent result, there has been a fairly even spread of results across the last couple of decades. Liverpool have won 12 of the last 38 meetings between these sides with Arsenal victorious in 10 of those. 42% of those matches have ended all square.

Arsenal have struggled at this venue recently and haven’t been victorious here since 2012. They were beaten 4-0 here during their last PL visit, however, they did win in the EFL Cup back in 2020.

The last time that Arsenal won here in the Premier League, Robin Van Persie scored a double to enable the Gunners to secure all three points.

Key Betting Stats

  • Only Manchester United (8) have conceded fewer home goals than Liverpool (9) this season
  • Despite their excellent defensive record, Liverpool home matches have contained an average of 3.31 goals. This is only bettered by three PL sides.
  • No PL side has scored more second half goals than Arsenal (41)
  • Arsenal have conceded the fewest away Premier League goals this season (9). The next nearest is Newcastle (11).
  • Nine of Aaron Ramsdale’s 12 clean sheets this season have come away from home.
  • Arsenal have scored 3+ goals in each of their last five Premier League games
  • Bukayo Saka is enjoyed a fantastic season for Arsenal. He’s scored 12 times and is into double figures for assists too.

Match Prediction

Arsenal will be desperate to avoid defeat in this one and by the time this game kicks off, they will know the outcome of Manchester City’s game. Liverpool are a tough nut to crack at home, however, they appear to be stuck in a rut. A point would be respectable for the visitors with the excellent Bukayo Saka to contribute once again.
