Liverpool vs Man United Betting Preview

By Ernie Bibby, Thursday, March 2, 2023 1:22 pm

The final Premier League fixture of Sunday afternoon takes place at Anfield as Liverpool host in-form Manchester United. This game kicks off at 4:30pm.

Liverpool

Although Liverpool fans will be disappointed that their side remain sixth in the Premier League table, there have been some signs of life from the Reds recently. Jurgen Klopp has been helped by having many of his first-choice starters returning to the XI with the injury crisis seemingly abating, they should be able to put together a strong finish to their underwhelming campaign.

The Reds are looking more secure defensively and come here off the back of four consecutive clean sheets in the Premier League. They’ve also kept the opposition off the score-sheet in five of their last six appearances.

At the other end of the field, they haven’t quite clicked and Mo Salah has looked a shadow of his former self. On a positive, Darwin Nunez appears to have settled into life in Merseyside fairly well and he has looked sharp over the last couple of weeks.

The hosts have been victorious in each of their two home matches against top six sides and they will be confident of taking something from this tie.

Man United

It’s been a hectic few weeks for Manchester United who have competed in the FA Cup, EFL Cup and the Champions League. Erik Ten Haag’s side have been victorious across each of those assignments although they were made to work hard for their 2-1 success over West Ham in midweek.

In the top flight, the visitors have a four point advantage over fourth place Spurs and they will be looking to continue to keep tabs on the top two with a victory here.

They are extremely solid at Old Trafford, however, their form on the road is mixed. They have won just one of their last three away games and have been victorious in just one of their six away visits to top half sides this season.

The United squad has remained remarkably injury-free over the last few weeks and they should be able to name a strong XI for this crucial Sunday afternoon fixture.

Head to Head

There has been a fairly even split across the last 39 meetings between these sides. Manchester United have won on 17 occasions whereas Liverpool have taken 14 victories during that same period.

Despite dominating the shot-count, Liverpool were beaten by the Red Devils when they met at the end of August. It was a much-needed victory for Erik Ten Haag, who had seen his side defeated in their opening two fixtures.

Although there have been plenty of goals in recent meetings, exactly 50% of their last 39 meetings have seen over 2.5 goals pay out.

Key Betting Stats

  • Liverpool have lost just a single game at Anfield all season (vs Leeds)
  • Only three sides have conceded fewer home goals than Liverpool so far (9) – Newcastle, Man United and Chelsea.
  • Six of Liverpool’s nine clean sheets have come at Anfield.
  • Despite their defensive exploits, Liverpool matches at this venue have averaged three goals per game.
  • Manchester United away games have averaged 3.08 goals per match so far.
  • Marcus Rashford have netted 14 Premier League goals this season, however, only three of those efforts have come away from Old Trafford.
  • Roberto Firmino has netted six of his seven goals at Anfield.

Match Prediction

It’s hard to ignore Liverpool’s home form and regardless of the opposition in the PL, it’s always advised to keep them on side. They’ve been defending well enough and it’s difficult to see a potentially weary United routinely finding a way through. Casemiro is also worth keeping an eye on. The Brazilian has scored some crucial goals and with five bookings to his name, he never seems far from the referee’s notebook.
