Newcastle vs Liverpool Betting Preview

High-flying Newcastle host inconsistent Liverpool on Saturday teatime. The game takes place at St. James’ Park and kicks off at 5:30pm UK time.

Newcastle

Despite having failed to win in five of their last six Premier League encounters, Newcastle remain firmly rooted within the top six. Eddie Howe’s side are almost to beat and they haven’t suffered a top flight defeat since the end of August. Their last PL loss came against this weekend’s opposition and they will be keen to exact revenge on Saturday evening.

Injuries are starting to hit them hard with three players, Miguel Almiron, Joe Willock and Allan Saint-Maximin, all having been withdrawn from the field during the club’s 1-1 draw with Bournemouth last weekend.

The Magpies have been extremely strong at home, although they were arguably second best against West Ham a fortnight ago. Nevertheless, that was the first goal that they’ve conceded at this venue since the beginning of October.

Although they are difficult to breach, goals have been tough to come by. They’ve scored just three times in their last six matches and they will need to improve their output if they are to collect all three points this weekend.

Liverpool

It’s been a tremendously disappointing season for Liverpool, however, the gloom has temporarily been lifted by Monday’s Merseyside derby victory. That victory ended a four-match winless streak in the PL, although it continued their superb home form. The Reds are unbeaten in 10 of their 11 matches here, yet they are largely poor on their travels.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are extremely leaky on the road and they’re giving away plenty of chances. They’ve conceded exactly three goals in each of their last three away games and haven’t managed to keep a clean sheet away from Anfield since the beginning of September (vs Everton).

With just two away victories to their name, Liverpool aren’t particularly fancied to secure three points in this fixture, however, they now have something to build upon.

Head to Head

Liverpool have tended to dominate this fixture is recent seasons and they have won each of the last four meetings between these sides. A 98th minutes winner from Fabio Carvalho secured a deserved 2-1 success earlier in the campaign

Newcastle have failed to win any of their last 12 games against Liverpool and they’ve also failed to score in each of the last two meetings at St. James’ Park.

The Reds have won 17 of the last 27 meetings between these two sides and this fixture has ended all-square six times. Although 63% of the fixtures between these teams have featured three or more goals, the last two fixtures at this venue have been extremely low-scoring (0-1 and 0-0).

Key Betting Stats

  • Newcastle have kept clean sheets in 55% of their matches this season. In contrast, Liverpool have managed just 29%.
  • Liverpool have conceded an average of 1.90 goals per game on the road. Only five sides have a higher average than the Reds.
  • Newcastle have been breached on just six occasions at home. That’s an average of just 0.55 goals per game.
  • Newcastle matches have been fairly low-scoring and have averaged just 2.18 goals per game.
  • The Magpies have only failed to score twice at home this season.
  • Miguel Almiron is the club’s top goal-scorer with 10 goals so far. Callum Wilson has found the net on seven occasions and averages more shots on target than any other Newcastle player.
  • Mo Salah found the net on Monday night. He is the club’s top goal-scorer with eight goals.

Match Prediction

Previously meetings at this ground have been fairly low-scoring and this is likely to go the same way. Newcastle’s attacking impetus could be stifled by recent injuries, however, they will make themselves typically tough to beat. Liverpool are weaker on the road and that winless streak on the travels is unlikely to end here.
