Manchester United vs Newcastle EFL Cup Final Betting Preview

By Ernie Bibby, Saturday, February 25, 2023 1:39 am

Manchester United and Newcastle go head-to-head at Wembley Stadium on Sunday afternoon. This game gets underway at 4:30pm and will be live on Sky Sports.

Manchester United

Manchester United were ruthlessly efficient against Leicester last weekend as they eased past the Foxes at Old Trafford. Erik Ten Haag’s side have won three of their last four matches and are now just three points behind rivals Manchester City. Ten Haag has spoken of his desire to win trophies in England and this gives him the perfect opportunity to claim his first piece of silverware.

The Red Devils have been superb in this competition so far and they’ve won each of their last four matches without conceding. Although the draw has been relatively kind to them, they have had to overcome ties against Championship leaders Burnley and a much-improved Nottingham Forest outfit.

The trophy-laden club have enjoyed enormous success across all competitions and they have won the EFL Cup on five previous occasions with their last triumph coming in 2016-17.

Newcastle

Newcastle suffered just their second Premier League defeat of the campaign last weekend as they were beaten 2-0 by Liverpool at St. James’ Park. It’s been a fairly barren February for the Magpies, who have picked up just two points from a possible nine so far this month. With just a single win in 2023 and an ongoing injury crisis, this game is likely to be viewed as a welcome distraction for Eddie Howe’s men.

The Tyneside outfit have overcome four fellow Premier League sides en-route to the final and with the exception of their shootout victory against Crystal Palace, they’ve been fairly good value for their EFL Cup victories.

Newcastle will be without their two first-choice goalkeepers for this showpiece event and with Joe Willock struggling for fitness, they may be a little short of options in the centre of the park. Joelinton hobbled off against Liverpool last weekend, but he could be fit enough to feature on Sunday.

Head to Head

These two sides played out a goalless draw when they met earlier in the campaign. Manchester United have tended to dominate in this fixture in four of the last six meetings, although the last two games have ended all-square.

The last EFL Cup meeting between these two sides came in September 2012 with Manchester United claiming a 2-1 victory.

Key Betting Stats

  • Newcastle have conceded just four goals across their last 11 EFL Cup matches.
  • Manchester United have conceded just five times across their last 11 EFL Cup matches
  • Marcus Rashford has found the net in four of his last five EFL Cup appearances and netted twice against Charlton Athletic at the beginning of January.
  • Joelinton has netted in two of his last three EFL Cup appearances.
  • Only one of the last four EFL Cup finals has featured two or more goals
  • Manchester United have won three of their last four EFL Cup final appearances

Match Prediction

Both sides will be keen to get their hands on some silverware this weekend, however, Manchester United come into this match in far better form. Erik Ten Haag’s side have a superb record in this competition and have a far deeper squad too. Newcastle have injury and suspension worries and looked a little short of quality against Liverpool. That could count against them.
